The MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey Shows Positive Changes in Underage Drinking
The MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey (MWAHS) is an initiative of the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation to support community efforts to improve the health of youth in the region. Since 2006, middle and high schools across the region have administered surveys every other year to monitor trends in health and risk behaviors at the local and regional levels. In Milford, the 2010 MWAHS was administered to middle school students in grades 7 and 8 and high school students in grades 9 through 12.
The survey of Milford High School students revealed that lifetime alcohol use has decreased between 2006 and 2010 from 67.3% to 55%. Current alcohol use is also down from 38.5% to 29.7%. Reports also show that binge drinking has decreased from 21.7% to 16.9%, and riding in a driver who has been drinking has decreased from 24.4% to 21.7%.
The survey also revealed that fewer Milford Middle School students are starting to drink alcohol. In 2010 20% of youth reported drinking in their lifetime, which is a decrease from 28% in 2006. The decline in alcohol use is notable among males, with reported lifetime use decreased from 35% in 2006 to 17% in 2010. Females remained the same at 23% between 2006 and 2010. Despite the decrease in alcohol use, reports of riding with a driver who had been drinking have increased from 22% in 2006 to 26% in 2010.
